The author CLAIMS: In years past, immigration into the United States was treated as a privilege, not a right to be granted automatically just by being able to make it to America's shoreline or borders. Today, however, the entire process of immigration has been drastically politicized by both major parties in Washington, D.C.; one party sees votes - the other, cheap labor. This is investigative journalist Jon Dougherty's probing look into how this indiscriminate immigration is tearing at the fabric of our culture and society. Interviewing Border Patrol agents, local residents, citizen-enforcement groups and even the immigrants themselves, Dougherty examines the "implicit dangers" of "our reckless attitude toward admittance", showing how all American citizens, native-born and otherwise, are consequently threatened by welfare fraud, drug lords, and terrorism. This is the untold, unnerving true story about the social and political turmoil on the U.S.-Mexico border. These are UNFOUNDED accusations.

Reviews:

This book is almost a joke, if not a disgrace. THe previous 5 star ratings of this book just show the real ignorance of people in this country. If any of you were to actually travel to mexico, let alone LIVE in mexico - you would see the truth behind border issues and immigration. This book portrays all mexicans as a bunch of criminals who illegally enter this "great" country and engage in nothing but criminal activity. All of which for the most part is not true.

The truth is that most of america's drug and violence problems are not caused by mexican immigrants - rather by AMERICANS; mostly those living in poverty themselves. all you have to do is read the stats.

This is typical of sensationalist journalism at its best. Also sheer ignorace at its best - not just of the author, but of the poeple who review this kind of jounralism with 5 stars.

Also - the pictures of the border in this book are nothing but a joke. Maybe in a few remote places there is still a wooden sign saying "do not cross". But, how about you photograph the truth? - the real border that runs all along mexico. THe one with barbed wire, and motion sensors. the one with jeeps patrolled with gunmen. How about you observe the racial profiling that goes on at the border. photograph the abuse of US customs people on commuters as they try and drive thru the border daily to get to LEGAL jobs in this country. How about you also photograph the part of the border in Tijuana where coffins and crosses symbolize the number of YOUNG, if not innocent, lives LOST - lives merely trying to escape poverty in search of a better life

Truth also, is that america needs workers who are willing to work for 7 dollars an hour. Immigrants are not a bunch of animal criminals as most people make them out to be. Try reading some DECENT, INTELLECTUAL literature, about the economics of immigration.

this book reminds me of those tabloids you see in the super market - nothing but sensationalistic journalism with hideous photography thrown in between.

this book was not worth the discounted price that I paid for it. Clearly the author is working on the side of the racist crackpots out there and is not looking at the reality of the border situation. He seems to have spent some time with the fringe border vigilante-militia types and has obviously sided with them. We need a serious book about the border situation as is today and unfortunately this one isn't it.
